1st year art show: untold future
At a young age, I attended a friend of mine’s party. I don’t remember much about it, but I do remember a small, innocent girl holding a balloon. At one point she lost focus and let go of her balloon. While she watched her balloon disappear into the sky, her mother told her… “Don’t worry, your balloon is going to visit Grandpa.”
Whether or not you believe in the idea of an afterlife, we know for sure that beyond the limits of our own atmosphere, there lies so much more. Unfortunately, we have no way of reaching beyond our own planet. I thought it was interesting that this young girl’s mother tried to convince her that the only thing beyond this earth is only achievable by death.
Looking back on this now, I realize how ridiculous this is. I decided to inspire my art after that. I made the girl a silhouette to show that who she is, is undefined because she has the ability to become whatever she wants. I also made her small compared the the size of the piece as a whole to demonstrate that she can make any series of decisions she wants to be whatever kind of person she chooses to be. She is standing in front of a sunrise to represent new beginnings; being a young girl, she still has a full life to achieve whatever she chooses. Finally, the sky is full of different planets to establish the sheer mass of what she can accomplish.
Using spray paint at the medium of the piece, was very new and a bit of a challenge. It’s completely different than anything I’ve ever done. I wanted to use spray paint because it is more of a rough medium showing that the little girl’s future is undefined. However, with the right technique, you can get nice detail with spray paint which helps to convey a message.

project #6
In this project I was only inspired by my ideal future. Ideally, I would like to become an architect. Architecture combines art and math to create something amazing. I have always been facinated by buildings and their designs. It is amazing how something someone draws on paper can become such a big part of the world and effect so many people's lives.
I wanted to design a simple house that is still modern. I used two point perspective to capture the depth in the piece. I deliberately drew a blank landscape to draw attention to the house.
If I were to redo this project I would make the colors which are farther back more opaque to show more depth. I would do the same thing with my line work with is consistently dark even as it touches the line work.

Project #5: Childhood to adulthood
For my childhood to adulthood project, I chose to draw a jigsaw puzzle with the finished puzzle showing the turbotax logo. This is supposed to represent the development from childhood, where everything is fun, to adulthood, where you have responsibilities such as taxes. I decided to leave the puzzle rather bland to show that taxes aren't fun. I did the same thing with the background. I left pieces missing from the puzzle to show that you never actually grow up because there is always a puzzle to finish.
If I were to redo this project, I would spend more time on it because I am not completely happy with how it turned out. I think I rushed it a little too much and I think it could be higher quality. I would also adjust the composition because it is not very interesting right now. I think it would be more interesting if the perspective was at an angle to shows the different angles this could be seen from.

Project #3: In honor of...
For this project, I wanted to honor one of my personal heroes, Stan Lee. I took on this project recently after his death at the age of 95. While it is sad that he is no longer with us, the man lived a very rich and full life, and was able to fulfill his dream. He originally wanted to write the great american novel, but he also had a crack at comic books. Using a different method, Stan Lee was able to revolutionize the comic book industry. This is why I thought it would be nice to honor him in one of my artworks since I have always enjoyed his work and will miss him now that he is gone.
project #2: expertise needed
project #1:Scott on the spot
This is a portrait of the old principal of George Washington high school. He was the principal for my freshman and sophomore years. I really liked his ideas for the school and how they affected the students. While my sophomore year was only my second year at GW, it was Mr. Lessard's last year. I was sad for him, but also a little excited to see what the new principal would do for the school. Unfortunately, I was less than pleased with some of the changes made to the school for my junior year. This made me want to dedicate a piece of art to Mr. Lessard because I like him as the principal and wish he was still in charge.
