Memory/fantasy:
When I was thinking about what I wanted to do for this piece, I decided to stray more towards the fantasy side of the prompt. I thought about some of the goals I have in life. One of the biggest goals I have is to be able to drive a supercar. I have been interested in cars for several years now. I think they are so cool with how manufacturers are always pushing the limits and designing cars that can do things that we never thought would be possible.
Shepard fairey artist copy
This is a copy of Shepard Fairey's "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" Piece. This is an extremely well known piece by Shepard Fairey. I found this extremely fun to recreate because I think this style of art is very interesting. I did not make this in the same media Fairey did. I used sharpie, whereas Fairey used a stencil so he could recreate the image many times. This was important to spread the message of this piece. he made it into stickers and put them up all over the place.

Shepard Fairey
Research
Frank Shepard Fairey was born on February 15, 1970 in Charleston South Carolina. He is a contemporary street artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and founder of OBEY Clothing, which emerged from the skateboarding culture. The piece of art that made him famous was his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign while attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Aside from Andre the Giant, he became even more well known in 2008 during the presidential election for the Barack Obama “Hope” poster. He was described as one of the most influential street artists. His work was displayed in many museums around the country, and a few overseas.
His art has created many opportunities. The andre the giant obey sticker has turned into a large skate clothing brand. It is not as popular today, but in the early 2000s it was very popular. His Obama Hope poster has spawned many parodies over the years. This includes posters for other presidents and different public figures. This includes people like our current president, President Donald Trump. What is interesting about most of the parodies made, is that they are all made to mock the person they are for instead of empower them. In the case of President Trump, the word “NOPE” is used instead of “HOPE”. Showing how the artists feels about the current president.

Patterns in nature:
When I was thinking about patterns in nature, I thought about the ocean. The ocean doesn't seem like it has much pattern as far as the way it looks, but it does have pattern. Sailing from one country to another takes a long time, a long time on the open ocean. What becomes of your daily life when sailing, become very repetisious because the views and surrounding are always the same. Lying deeper in the ocean are all different species of fish, sharks, whales, etc. Another example of patterns in the ocean is schools of fish. These fish one together in unison. It is very mesmerizing and is a great example of pattern.
My Grandfather was in the Navy in his early twenties, and spent a lot of his time on a naval ship. Many years after he was done serving, he gave me the compass he used to navigate. Compasses are crucial when sailing on the ocean because there is no other way to tell where you are going.
I wanted to capture all of this in my work. I decided to leave it as a more minimalist piece because I believe that reflects how empty and lonely the ocean can be. After all, it's not where humans are supposed to spend large periods of time. I also wanted to make the compass a rusty redish orange color, not only because it contrasted nicely against the blue background of the waves, but also because it shows the wear and antiqueness of the compass. I wanted to do this because of the old compass my grandfather gave me years ago.
If I were to redo this project, I would change the media of the background to something other than collage. I found it very difficult to get the edges of each smaller piece of paper to align with the others to make a seamless transition. I am happy with how it turned out, but I think it could be better if the the background was perfectly aligned.

Protest & persuasion printmaking:
When thinking about what I wanted to protest, I simply thought back to when I was in elementary school. This is when I still believed the world was perfect, and people were meant to succeed. However, during this same time, many things started happening that proved this wrong. Specifically, the shooting of Michael Brown, The Ferguson Riots, and the death of Eric Garner. Once I started to see these happen, I realized that this world has many issues. When making this piece, I was thinking more specifically about Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Both of these men were killed by police. Many people argue that they were doing nothing wrong. Unfortunately, there is no good way to tell if that is true or not. From what we know, Michael Brown stopped when the police told him to, got on his knees, put his hands up, and said "don't shoot." In my mind this seems like the logical thing to do in this situation, but the officer decided to shoot him 12 times from a distance of less than 1 foot. That is why I thought this would be a good idea for a piece on protest. Michael Brown was thinking logically and was trying to be as respectful to the police officer as he could be, but he was still killed.
Obviously, none of the examples I mentioned are recent, but I decided to focus on these because these were the first instances that I remember, that I thought were really messed up and this is what proved to me that the world is not as perfect as it is made out to be.
